How I work
I offer a safe, confidential, non-judgmental, calm space in which you can take the time to understand what is on your mind. The space in which we work is quiet and there is no agenda or pressure to go anywhere that you do not feel comfortable going.
I believe that clients have, within them, the resources for growth and change and that they are the experts in themselves. My role being to help support and encourage exploration of the self, helping each client connect with their inner values and intrinsic sense of self-worth, in order to gain self understanding and an ability to find their own way forward.
I don’t arrive with a fixed agenda or a set of techniques to apply to you.
I work in a humanistic and existential way, which really just means I’m interested in you as a whole person and not a set of symptoms.
We pay attention to how things actually feel for you, and to the bigger questions that often sit underneath what brings someone to therapy: living with change and uncertainty, finding meaning, and making choices that feel genuinely your own.
My hope is that, together, we can build the kind of self-understanding that helps you move forward with more clarity and more trust in yourself. I trust that you already hold much of what you need, and my role is to help you reach it, at a pace that feels safe.
What humanistic and existential psychotherapy means
Humanistic and Existential Psychotherapy uses a wide range of approaches to look at the whole person, taking into account mental, physical and emotional needs. They are united by an emphasis on understanding human experience and a focus on the client rather than the symptom.
Existential psychotherapy explores what it feels like for us to exist in the world, including the distress we experience when confronted with life’s ultimate concerns, such as meaninglessness, social isolation, a lack of freedom and the inevitability of death. Together we look to increase self -awareness and self-understanding in order to enhance ability to make authentic, meaningful and self-directed choices about how to live.
For me therapy is about finding a way of 'being' in the world that feels manageable. Finding ways to cope and recognising that we are all defined by our choices and actions; restrictions and freedoms and our awareness of such.
"The degree to which I can create relationships, which facilitate the growth of others as separate persons, is a measure of the growth I have achieved in myself.”
― Carl R Rogers, On Becoming a Person: A Therapist's View of Psychotherapy

-
We'll arrange a short introductory call, free of charge. It's a chance to talk a little about what's brought you to therapy and to get a sense of whether we'd work well together. There's no obligation to book anything afterwards.
-
That depends on what you're bringing and the kind of work we do together. Some people come for a shorter, time-limited piece of work; others prefer to work open-endedly over a longer period. We can talk about it at the start, and keep reviewing it as we go.
-
Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice will be payable in full. If for any reason, I have to cancel the session, there is no charge. I will always try to offer an alternative day or time during that week, but this is not always guaranteed.
A gentle note on getting started
Therapy is for everyone; you don't need to be in crisis to benefit. Whether you're looking to make a change, understand a difficult feeling, or simply give yourself space to think, the first step is often the hardest. Whenever you feel ready, I'd be glad to hear from you.
